New Zealand's first national tyre recycling scheme is now fully operational.

TW2Another exciting material recovery scheme that is now fully operational is Tyrewise. Over a decade ago, tyre importers, retailers and others in the tyre supply chain came together to call for mandatory product stewardship for end-of-life tyres. In 2020, tyres were listed as one of the six priority products for regulated product stewardship in New Zealand. Now, Tyrewise has become the first regulated product stewardship scheme to go live!

3R Group has led the design of Tyrewise, which ensures that tyres are collected and recycled in an environmentally responsible manner. The scheme aims to divert tyres from landfills and illegal dumping sites by processing them for reuse in various applications, such as civil engineering projects and the creation of new products.

Historically, tyres have posed a challenge to recycle due to the combination of materials they contain—rubber, steel, and textiles—which complicates the recycling process. However, Tyrewise offers a comprehensive solution, helping businesses and local governments tackle this complex waste stream.

With around 6.5 million tyres imported each year, the sheer volume of tyres entering waste systems each year presents a significant challenge, but Tyrewise creates an opportunity for innovation and resource recovery. By participating in the scheme, businesses involved in the supply and processing of tyres can contribute to a more sustainable future while also realising economic benefits.
