Awards highlight potential. Behaviour creates success.

Bonson Packaging and Foodstuffs’ RePlay™ Returnable System has taken centre stage at the 2026 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards, winning three Gold Awards and one Silver and demonstrating how reusable packaging can combine sustainability, functionality, digital innovation and consumer engagement.

The awards, organised by the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP), recognise outstanding packaging innovation across Australia and New Zealand. Winners were announced at the PIDA Awards gala dinner at Crown Aviary in Melbourne on 28 July 2026, with category winners now eligible to represent Australia and New Zealand at the 2027 WorldStar Packaging Awards.

For Bonson Packaging, the recognition is a significant milestone for RePlay™ and the wider push towards practical, scalable reuse systems.

Four awards recognise RePlay™ innovation

RePlay™ was recognised across four PIDA categories, securing:

  • Gold – Sustainable Packaging Design | Reuse

  • Gold – Marketing Design

  • Gold – Labelling & Decoration Design

  • Silver – Food Packaging Design

The breadth of the recognition is particularly significant. Rather than being judged solely as a sustainable packaging initiative, RePlay™ demonstrated its strength across design, marketing, labelling and food packaging categories.

At its heart, RePlay™ is designed to provide a practical alternative to single-use food containers. But the system goes beyond simply replacing a disposable pack with a reusable one. Durable returnable containers are combined with digital identification, consumer engagement and traceability to create an integrated packaging system that supports the journey of the container beyond its first use.

Packaging innovation is becoming more integrated

RePlay™'s success reflects a broader trend emerging from this year's PIDA Awards. The strongest entries are increasingly solving multiple challenges at once. Sustainability, usability, accessibility, marketing and digital functionality are no longer being considered as separate objectives. Instead, they are being brought together within integrated packaging solutions.

This represents an important evolution for the packaging industry. Circular economy thinking is moving beyond material substitution alone, with greater attention being placed on reuse models, design for recovery and closed-loop systems. At the same time, consumer convenience and accessibility are becoming increasingly important to ensuring these systems work in the real world.

Digital functionality and traceability are also becoming part of the packaging proposition, helping connect the physical pack with the systems, businesses and consumers that support its reuse. RePlay™ exemplifies this shift by extending the role of packaging beyond the container itself and considering what happens before, during and after each use.

Sustainability is now an expectation

Perhaps the clearest message from the 2026 PIDA Awards is that sustainability is no longer a category in its own right. Instead, it has become an expectation that underpins good packaging design. RePlay™ demonstrates what that can look like in practice: a system where sustainability is integrated with functionality, consumer behaviour, branding and operational requirements rather than treated as a standalone feature.

The recognition across multiple PIDA categories reinforces this point. A successful reuse system needs to work not only from an environmental perspective, but also for businesses and consumers.
