Richard was a strong supporter of PNZ and ran the South Island Branch Affiliates Group for Many years. He was a Life Member of the South Island Branch. Richard Joined PDL Plastics in mid-1970’s and worked as purchasing officer at Alto Packaging (PDL) until his retirement in 2006.
His Wife Lexie, daughter Emma, Son in Law Mark and granddaughters Millie and Harriett were his life – particularly since retiring, Richard has attended all of Millie’s violin lessons and concerts and Harriett entertained him with her recorder recitals. Richard and Millie both shared the same love of music – Millie played a violin rendition of Hallelujah at his funeral – he would have been so proud of her.
Tennis, gardening and his family & friends ensured Richard had a Full and wonderful life. Richard’s love for tennis saw him achieve Life Membership at Waimairi Tennis Club and for the past 2 years has been Patron of Waimairi Club. Richard was also awarded Life Membership of Wilding Park Tennis, for services to Canterbury Tennis Two years ago he was made a Life Member of NZ Tennis – again, for services to the sport.
He was still playing tennis until March this year – he had suffered a few Cancer related operations over these past few years and in May, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Up until the last two weeks of his life he was still doing crosswords and listening to his beloved music. His mind was still very sharp, even in his final two weeks at the Hospice Although he could no longer walk – he still showed signs of his sparky humour and was enjoying seeing visitors.
Richard was one of life’s true gentlemen. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
